Hmm ... I don't know about others but, you could call it ... not wanting to start something you think you cannot finish, or not getting involved knowing that you don't have the will or stamina to see it through the end. It is something like, you figure that your car is not carrying enough petrol to get you to somewhere, so you won't make the trip unless you are sufficiently filled up. Sometimes, you are wary of getting hurt (again) that when similarities appear, you want to get out of it fast or thread on slowly and carefully.
