Being not-as-smart renders me frontline jobs like sales, ushering and flyer distributing. Otherwise I would be giving tuition and musing at silly people resorting to low level jobs like these. Or I can study so hard for a scholarship that pays me allowance as well, then I can say all I can want about the opportunity costs of me working so hard for a scholarship and that's why others have to work to earn money and I don't need to. You think I really want to work meh? If I am not bound by scarcity, then I would not have subjected myself to all these unneccssesary abuses liaoz.
And being in the direct contact with the customers, and sometimes backed by ball-less superiors who would do and say anything to keep a distance from customers, you sometimes really want to slap the customer and kick the superior's crouch but all you can do is curse under your breath and smile. Some middle management people are so paraniod, dainty and eager to impress that they impose absurd rules that are neither sensible nor effective. I suspect some of these young punks and old stiff joints have never worked on ground level before. Let me at least put in a good word, some of them are really good drivers; slave drivers.
Sometimes I think that since I am the one bringing in the money directly, why am I paid the least in the chain? Shouldn't I be paid more for my hardwork that is actually bringing in for the company tens of thousands? Why am I at the wrong end of capitalism?
But I must admit, it's a pretty dirty job to be in contact with customers. Singaporeans are a cheapo lot. They metmorphosize the perfect model of consumers in economics; wanting the best but paying the least. They simply don't care that others are also trying to earn a living. I don't feel like describing how shameless they can get, in short they don't give a damn that people like me is providing a service and I should be duly paid for it. I also really cannot stand people who treat service providers as if they are of a lower class. Some of these people really know how to abuse their non-existent powers and now I can understand why service standards of Singapore is so low compared to Japan, Hong Kong or Taiwan; consumers here are big-time suckers. How can you expect people to respect you when you don't respect other people? Salesman are also human loh ... ushers are also somebody's child loh ... runners can do their job happily if you can treat them politely loh ... Some jobs are difficult, some are simple. Doing a simple job does not make one simpler or lower status than anybody, because 职业不分贵贱. After all, what are you superiors without ground staff like me, without whom you cannot accompish your job? Go and sell to the customer youself, go and do ushering yourself, go and distribute flyers yourself, do without your runner and do everything yourself, I'm sure you will screw it up and go screw yourself anyway.
All you smarties who will start your high flying careers in management, better know how to treat your subordinates right. And don't ever think their job is easy compared to yours and question why they cannot do such simple things correctly. *Arghh!
