Inspiration is like beautiful women; They are hard to come by, and once their prescence expires, they won't come again.

Been inspired by various sources within a span of a few days. The first being a newspaper report on a group of ladies (all Singaporean!) in their fifties climbing Mt Kilimanjaro (5898M). And between them, the various members have climbed other mountains all over the world like Elbrus, Aconcagua, Kinubalu ... etc

And mind you ... they all hold administrative posts and are all married with kids. I really admire their courage to even come up with such a proposition, and then their mental strength to complete such a feat. Wahh .. really hero leh. Anyway, I wonder what were their husbands' and their families' first reactions to their idea.

The next source of inspiration, will surely fascinate Mr X as well. Mr X and I got acquainted first through volunteer work, and then through our love for biking. I got my 2B first, but he got his bike first, and also his 2A first. He would surely get his Class 2 ahead of me liaoz.

Long Way Round. By Ewan Mcgregor and Charley Boorman.

These 2 good friends went on a ride aross the globe. And yes, he is the same Ewan Mcgregor who acted in Moulin Rouge and Star Wars. I have also toyed with the idea of riding around the world, but I figure it could never ever happen. Mr X is the other person who have mentioned before he would love to ride around the world on his dream bike, Hayabusa.

Similar to the ladies in fifties, these blokes have a fledging career to tend to and respective families to care and provide for. Somemore at the time of their trip, their kids are still fairly young.

I don't think I could ever pull off a stunt like that. How did they come up with the resources and heart to do this, given their age and marital status? What if I went broke on a trip like this? Then my family will suffer as well. What if I seriously injure myself? (I am less afraid of dying) What if nobody wants to employ me when I am back? Man ... it sure takes lots of courage to push this through ... hats off to these two dudes.

I would think that a marriage would put an end all these 'madness'. No more bumming around, no more adventure trips .. everything would revolve around the family instead of your own dreams.

This book is very nice to read. Ewan and Charley took turns to narrate the whole trip as if it is a diary. Any avid, oppressed biker and naturally-born-traveller (aka yaohui) would clearly identify with this book. It isn't only a logbook of events and happenings. It recorded the adventures, frustrations and the reflections. Let me cut you an excerpt that could illustrate this:

"The best part of the impromptu skinny-dip was that we had shaken off our obsession with keeping to the schedule. We wouldn't have stopped at that river a week or so earlier, when there was an overriding feeling that we had to keep going, come what may. But we'd come to realise that keeping to planned mileage was pointless if we didn't experience anything along the way. We were three and a half days behind schedule but it didn't matter any more. The days were merging into one another. The experiences felt deeper and just as intense, but less pointed. I was taking fewer photographs and talking less about what we had seen and done each day because I no longer felt like a tourist or a traveller. The journey had become my life."
